The book was ready for print in 1987, but due to the political upheavals in Eastern Europe and situation in Bulgaria, it was not published.
It came to print in 2001, when fascinated by the works of Sadeq Hedayat, the owner of the Radar Print publishing house Mr. Yashar Abdoulselamoglu offered his financial help, and published Light and Shadow, which contains the novels Buf-e kur (The blind owl) and Haji Agha, as well as thirteen short stories: Haji Morad, Abji Khanom, Mordehkhorha (Vultures), Dash Akol, Talab-e amorzesh (Seeking absolution), Laleh, Afarinegan, Mohalel, Zani ke mardesh ra ghom kard (The woman who lost her husband), Alaviye khanom, Sag-e velgard (The stray dog), Mihanparast (Patriot), Ghaziye-ye zir-e botteh (The incident under the bush).
Although several of Hedayat's short stories have been translated into Bulgarian and published before, this edition of his selected writings in a new translation is the first comprehensive introduction of his works to the Bulgarian public.

In the beginning of 2001 an idea occured to me to compile a collection of short stories by contemporary women-writers from the countries of the Middle East, Central and South Asia (Syria, Turkey, Kuwait, India, Iran, Pakistan and others). I shared the idea with my colleagues from the Center and they promised to contribute translations of short stories from the literatures on which they did their research. Thanks to the efforts of the translators and to my colleagues from the Indology section Nadejda Rozova and Valentina Marinova, who helped me a great deal in compiling and editing the book, the manuscript of " To be a woman from the East…" was ready in five months.
And once again, this project came to fruition with the financial backing of Mr. Yashar Abdoulselamoglu, the owner of Radar Print publishing house. He also proposed the title of the book. As we say at the Center, behind our "To be a woman from the East " there is a man from the East... Thank you, Yashar! Without you, this project would not have been possible.

Lyudmila Yaneva; Fereshteh Sari "Zaman-e gom shodeh" (Lost Time) tr. Nevena Angelova, Mahbube Mirghadiri " Yek ruz-e zendegi" (A day in the life) tr. Lyudmila Yaneva; Roya Shapurian "Niaz" (Need) tr. Lyudmila Yaneva; and some poems by Forugh Farrokhzad tr. Elissaveta Alexandrova and Simin Behbahani tr. Nevena Angelova.
Other works, translated from the Iranian languages, comprise Spozhmai Zaryab’s "Saat-e dari" (Dari lesson) and Angoshtar-e tala (The golden ring) tr. from Dari Iveta Zlatarova; Suzan Samanci’s "Ji rojnivisa keçikeki" (From a young girl’s diary) tr. from Kurdish Yashar Abdoulselamoglu. Some poems by the Kurdish poet Choman Hardi were translated from English by Zhana Zheliazkova.

The book was published with the financial support of the Iranian Cultural Section in Sofia, and its chief at that time Seyed Hossein Mousavi.
This text book is for second year students of Iranian Studies at the Center of Eastern Languages and Cultures at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridsky". Each lesson follows the established pattern in the "Persian Language Textbook – part one" (author Angel Orbetsov): main text in Persian with explanatory notes and a vocabulary, grammatical part, exercises and second text related to the main theme and using more or less the same vocabulary. In all lessons the grammar is derived from the main text. At the end of each lesson exercises and a topic for essay writing connected with the discussed theme is also given.
Thus "Persian Language Textbook – part two" enriches the students' vocabulary and broadens their grammatical knowledge. It acquaints them with Iranian history, economy, industry, with the literary and folk traditions, with the richness and specific character of the Persian language, with Persian proverbs and sayings.

Since we do not have many books of contemporary Iranian literature, which students of Persian can use to expand their language skills, I decided to select several contemporary writers and present them in a collection of Persian short stories. In order to have a free hand in my selections, I financed it myself.
The reader "Modern Iranian short story"/26 short stories from 26 writers/ is a teaching tool used by fourth-year students in the field of Iranian Studies, in courses on translation. It comprises works by Iranian writers from the second, third and fourth generation. Students are acquainted with the Iranian writers living in Iran (e.g. Farkhondeh Aghaei, Shiva Arastoo'i, Mohamad Poursani, Zoya Pirzad, Reza Jula'i , Amir Hassan Cheheltan, Ali Khodai, Ali Ashraf Dervishian, Mahmoud Doulatabadi, Moniru Ravanipoor, Fereshteh Sari, Gholam Hossein Saedi, Roya Shapourian, Bahram Sadeghi, Ebrahim Golestan, Hushang Golshiri, Ali Moazeni, Mahboobeh Mirghadiri, Fariba Vafi), and some of those living abroad (Mahshid Amirshahi, Shahrnoush Parsipour, GoliTaraghi, Farideh Kheradmand, Reza Daneshvar, Abbas Maaroufi, Fereshteh Molavi).
Thus the principle of teaching Iranian literature in the original is applied.

This book is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Center of Eastern Languages and Cultures at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridsky". The editorial staff is the same as in the collection "To be a woman from the East…" Nadejda Rozova, Valentina Marinova and me. The title of the book was given by Valentina Marinova. This time our project was supported by the Director of our Center, Prof. Alexander Fedotoff. Fifty three translators took part in its creation, all of them lecturers and graduates from this Center.
